Buy now, pay later shopping

Is Buy Now, Pay Later your best option?

Over half of consumers say they’ve used a “Buy Now, Pay Later” (BNPL) service from online retailers that advertises a zero percent rate. That might seem like a better deal than a credit card, but it likely isn’t.

It can be tempting to get what you want with little or no immediate payment. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau outlines cautions about these loans:

Impact on your credit score
BNPL lenders often don’t check your credit score and most don’t report your on-time payments to credit bureaus — a key element in increasing your credit score. However, if your BNPL loan gets turned over to a debt collector, it will get reported and hurt your credit score.

Perhaps no interest, but definitely big fees
The 0% interest rate they quote is misleading. Make a late payment and you’ll incur a late fee and probably a finance fee, too. One BNPL lender charges up to $38 per late payment!

Returns are a hassle
Say you need to return something purchased with a BNPL loan. Your agreement is with the lender, not the retailer. Although you may be able to return the purchase to the retailer, your BNPL loan agreement means you still have to pay for it and hope you get a credit down the line.

Fewer protections
Make a purchase with your credit card, you can dispute a charge. However, BNPL loans are not subject to the same consumer protections.

Learn more about BNPL loans before ever using one. And talk to us about our much more convenient credit card options that give you low rates, ease of use, and protections.

Repayment Plan Options

Student loan repayments begin May 1

The repayment freeze on eligible student loans is scheduled to end May 1, 2022. A few tips to prepare:

  • Visit your loan servicer’s website and update your contact information and in your StudentAid.gov profile, too.
  • For most borrowers, auto-debit payment will not restart automatically. Check with your loan servicer to confirm and initiate again if needed.
  • If your income or family size has changed, consider applying for an income-driven repayment plan to make payments more affordable.

Book mark this Federal Student Aid page for more information.

Successful events thanks to you

Blood Drive
As our country faces a national blood crisis, we’re so grateful to members and our employees who donated. Thanks to you, the amount of blood donated during this event will directly impact the lives of up to 63 patients, according to the Red Cross. Even better, we had ten first-time donors!

Shred Day Recap
You didn’t let an unseasonably hot February day stop you from safely disposing of nearly 13 tons of personal documents. Congratulations to these members who won $25 Amazon Gift Cards for participating:

  • Bonnie M.
  • Joan R.
  • Anayeli T.
  • Christina C.

Food Share CAN-tree donations
Thank you to our members who donated so generously in support of our Food Share CAN-tree Food Drive. We were honored to be given the Best Theme award and 2nd Can Crusher status for creating 20 trees! We raised $13,300 which is enough to provide 79,800 meals. For every $100 you donated you’re providing 600 nutritious meals to our friends and neighbors struggling with the stress of hunger and food insecurity. We also want to thank the 30 VCCU employees who donated their time to create our award-winning trees.

Don’t let your account lapse

VCCU is legally required to close an account that has not had activity for three years; funds in these accounts must be turned over to the State of California. You can prevent this by making a transaction on the account (unfortunately automatic transactions don’t count) or simply contacting us to confirm you want to keep the account open.
